The Travels of the Sparks Family

The William Sparks identified as the first generation in America for our line was located in Queen Anne's county, Maryland in 1670.  Three generations of our Sparks family, William Jr., William Sample, and Matthew J. Sparks were born in Maryland. (See the Early Sparks Ancestors Chart for additional information.)  The Sparks family traveled steadily westward, first to North Carolina where several of the Matthew Sparks children were born, including our Nathan Sparks.  Nathan moved on to Georgia where he was married.  From there the family moved on west to Tennessee where  the children of our Nathan Sparks were born in Wilson County.  By 1850 several of the Sparks brothers moved on to Arkansas,  and it was in Arkansas where all but one of the William C. Sparks children were born.

William C.'s uncle for whom he was named had moved to Eastern Texas many years earlier,  to Nacogdoches county.  Our William C. Sparks was found on the 1870 Census in Paris, Lamar county, Texas. He and several of his brothers arrived in Texas prior to 1870 and remained there for almost 25 years.   The following links will guide you through the counties as the Sparks family traveled across Texas.  After that, William C. and his sons moved on to Indian Territory.  There are many Sparks cousins found in Texas from the 1830's through the early 1900's, and many were Cattle Ranchers.  The family was present in Oklahoma in the late 1800's prior to statehood and lived and worked among the Native Americans present there.
